Ocean Beach Kiwanis 65th Annual Kite Festival
Bigger and Better than Ever in a New Location!
The Ocean Beach Kiwanis Kite Festival, a beloved local tradition, is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. To honor the anniversary, this year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever. In addition to the traditional free kite making for children, this year’s festival will include demonstrations of kite flying and kite stunts by kite professionals and dedicated amateurs; more carnival rides; more food options, and a brand new location.
To make room for the new attractions, the Kite Festival is moving to Dusty Rhodes Park, on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. at the corner of Nimitz, across from Robb Field.
The date is Saturday, March 2. The hours are: 9 am to 4 pm for the craft fair and carnival rides; 9 am to 12 noon for kite making; 1 pm for prize judging; and 1:30 pm for awarding of prizes. Kite flying demonstrations will be intermittent during the late morning and/or early afternoon – depending on wind conditions.
The Ocean Beach Kiwanis Kite Festival is well into its third generation. People who took part in the festival as children are now bringing their own children and grandchildren to participate.
There is no admission charge, and kite making and instruction are free for children of all ages. Children are taught how to make a simple kite, a unique design that is guaranteed to fly. Prizes are awarded for the best decorated kites. The event is put on the by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach as a service to the community, in cooperation with the Ocean Beach Recreation Center and Ocean Beach Elementary School.
Applications to be a vendor in the craft fair are still being accepted. For information please contact: oceanbeachkiwanis@gmail.com or check out our Facebook Event.
